It’s time to bust the myth that healthy eating comes at the cost of disappointed taste buds. Here are five important dishes from our favourite holiday destinations that will leave both weight-watchers and flavour-cravers happy.

Exercise and healthy eating can do wonders for your happiness. But when holidaying abroad it can be hard to know what foods we can eat that will leave us feeling guilt-free and satisfied. To help avoid outbreaks of holiday ‘hangriness’ (hungry+angry) we’ve gathered some of the healthiest and most delicious meals from our favourite destinations around the world.

France – Ratatouille

Pronounced ‘Rat-ah-two-wee’, not ‘Rat-ah-toe-ill’, silly! This French classic, consisting of aubergines, peppers, courgettes, tomatoes and onions all fried together in a wondrous mix of olive oil and herbs, is more than just a great movie. Away from the creamy excesses of many French dishes, ratatouille offers a delicious, healthy meal packed with nutrients and flavour, while being low in calories – perfect!

Italy – Caprese Salad

Those looking for healthy food in Italy will have it easy. With an abundance of healthy ingredients like tomatoes, olive oil, herbs, vegetables, beans and lean proteins like chicken and seafood, it’s a great place for health-conscious foodies. Caprese salad in particular offers a boatload of benefits – made all the more impressive by the fact that it has just three ingredients. This delicious salad includes tomatoes, which are rich in antioxidants and vitamins; basil, which helps to protect against cancer and bacterial infection; and mozzarella, a fantastic source of calcium. As if the taste and nutrition weren’t amazing enough, the three colours of the salad – red, white and green – correspond to the colours of the Italian flag!

Portugal – Açorda Alentejana

An oft-used word to describe Portuguese cuisine is ‘hearty’, and although for us pie-loving Brits this is totally something we can get with, hearty food doesn’t tend to be particularly light on calories. Do not fear however, for the Açorda Alentejana is here. Nicknamed ‘beggar’s soup’, don’t let the unfortunate alias deter you. This meal is meat and fish free, hence the nickname, and is made up of mashed bread with olive oil, coriander, salt, poached eggs and water, creating something that is neither a soup nor a stew, but somewhere in between. This super flavourful, super healthy soup says no to being put in a box, but yes to being put into mouths.

USA – Avocado toast

The Americans have given us plenty of greasy comfort food over the years, but when holidaying in the States, how do you avoid the mac n’ cheeses, the hot dogs and the pizzas and get something less super-calorific? Avocado toast is the answer. This millennial mainstay is delicious yet wonderfully healthy. Along with other benefits, the rich selection of nutrients and vitamins found in avocados are thought to improve digestion, protect against cancer and even decrease the risk of depression.

Spain – Gazpacho

Spanish people are lucky. Unlike us Brits, they’re regularly visited by a yellow ball in the sky known as the sun. This means that while we lean towards piping hot soups that warm us up from the cold, Spanish soups often do the opposite. Gazpacho is a cold red soup that has its origins in the Roman era, when legionnaires would make a basic version of the soup while on expeditions. The dish was further developed by the Moors and the Spanish, incorporating exotic spices and tomatoes and red peppers from the New World to create the Gazpacho of today. Though the exact ingredients vary with the region, one thing remains the same. This cold soup is a rich source of minerals, antioxidants, fibre and vitamins C, A, and E. A perfect choice on a hot day.
